Moving Guide – A Checklist for Moving

Moving to a new home can be an exhausting process.  In the text below, you’ll find tips on how to plan your move and how to make your move less stressful.

Let’s take a look at a moving checklist.

1) First decision: Do we hire a professional moving company? At this point, there are several factors to ponder: the budget, the time, whether we are going to have help or not, the type of furniture that we have to transport … Carrying out ourselves offers us the opportunity to organize everything just as We want, so we can choose to hire a moving company just for the heavier things.

2) Things: The best thing is to take advantage of the move to clean up all the things that accumulate over the years. If you have trouble deciding, you can start with this idea: everything you have not used in recent years does not go to the new house; we can sell it or donate it.

3) Package: If we make the move ourselves, we must be very careful with the packaging and we must get the necessary material (boxes, bubble paper, sheets …).

4) List All: It is important to know exactly what you are going to take. Prepare a list of all your belongings and classify them. This classification can be based on what you are going to take with you, what you’ll take to storage, what you are going to give/sell and what are the things that you are going to throw away. Make a couple of side columns to specify what is already packaged, if they are already on the way and if they have already reached the destination point.

5) Calculate the volume of your shipment: Thanks to creating an inventory list, calculating the volume of your move will be easier. Moving companies charge depending on the volume, so it is recommended that you use a volume calculator to know exactly how many cubic meters you have to transport. If you are not going to need an object, get rid of it to save space and money.

6) Budget: Determine a maximum budget for your move Before making a move, it is necessary to have an action plan to avoid problems. One of the main concerns knowing: how much relocating costs. Therefore, it is advisable that you decide a fixed amount of money that you want to spend during the relocation. In this way, you can determine if it is worth making the move yourself or if you prefer to hire a moving company.

7) Start in advance: Do not leave everything to the last minute, save yourself some stress and start getting ready for the move with time. Two months in advance may seem like a lot, but it is a reasonable period of time.
It is advisable to decide which day will be best for you and when the companies have time. The most expensive months are usually between June and September.

8) Get rid of what you do not need: Sure you must have stuff with economic value that you cannot get rid of. However, think carefully and decide what you really need. Try to take what is necessary and reduce the volume of your shipment. Do not know what to do with the objects that are left over? Here are some ideas:

• Donate your belongings to a church.
• Donate your belongings to a charity.
• Sell items that you do not need, especially clothes, on eBay or second-hand stores in your city.
• Donate the clothes you do not want to sell.

9) Be careful with furniture with drawers: Knowing how to make a move is simple if you take into account some tips for your move, for example, that you can take advantage of the drawers of the dressers and cabinets as moving boxes. However, leaving them inside the furniture can make the move more complicated since the furniture is heavier and the drawers can fall during the journey. For light cabinets, we recommend that you secure the drawers with adhesive tape while for heavy furniture it is better to completely remove the drawers.

10) Take pictures of the cables: It is important that you take pictures of the cables to know how to reconnect all the cables back to your electronic devices. Make sure you have reference photos to make it easy for you to reconnect everything again; this can save you a lot of time and technical problems. Many people forget this step, but it is a trick to make a very useful organized move.

Will ensure that you get all of the essentials done so you stay on track for a stress-free move.
